At Beam kids learn to make their ideas happen through fine and manual arts, technology and collaboration. Beam Campers cultivate hands-on skills while exploring innovative thinking, design and the creative process. Campers engage with our full-time and visiting staff of professional architects, videographers, builders, engineers, designers, and makers of all kinds. They learn the tools, techniques and temperaments of creation while enjoying Beam’s two lakes, acres of mountain and forest, a well-equipped wood shop, art/ceramics studio, basketball court, two large athletic fields and outdoor fire pit.
Every year Beam commissions unique large-scale collaborative Projects that serve as centerpieces of each Beam session. Projects can range from the conceptual to the structural. We acquire and award Projects through a worldwide Call for Proposals. In past years we’ve worked with a diverse group of Project Masters: a video artist from Bulgaria, builders from Brooklyn, sculptors from London and an entire class of architecture students from Kassel, Germany.
Each morning, Beam Campers and Staff work together particular aspects of the Project in teams that we call Waves, which are composed of boys and girls of all ages.
In the afternoons, they participate in Domains, unique, in-depth, hands-on elective explorations in the fine arts, sciences, athletic or cultural fields, led by Visiting Professionals and Beam’s full-time staff.
