The Bank Street Summer Theater Program operates from a basis of collaboration between campers and instructors in a supportive and nurturing environment. Instructors guide children through a variety of group exercises and activities to give them a sense of ownership of their performance. Through physical and vocal expression, a sense of play is cultivated and an ensemble is born. All children are asked to start from where they are and encouraged to go to the edge of their imagination. Everyone is expected to work hard, play hard and have lots of fun.
The focus of Session 2 will be a “Production Workshop.” During this session, campers mount a full-scale musical production. Students develop skills in acting, singing and dance. We feel that it is important to include everyone as much as possible, and we take special care to ensure each camper has a substantial role. During each of our sessions, musical theater campers will be rehearsing, creating, collaborating, and performing. As campers prepare these performances, they’ll be exploring acting, improvisation, movement, dance, and other aspects of the performing arts process. Campers will also be attending a Broadway show. In previous years, the theater program has seen shows such as In the Heights, The Fantastiks, The Wiz and Sister Act!
The Theater program will also be involved in the usual Bank Street Summer camp fun: sports and games in Riverside Park, camp wide programs with the other Upper Camp groups, and of course the Bank Street swim program.
