  • The Practicum track combines lab work with instructor-led lectures in order to provide students the opportunity to refine their laboratory techniques and conduct research. Practicum students work together under the guidance of an instructor, who delivers morning research-intensive lectures and oversees afternoon lab work. The lab experiments are designed to demonstrate procedures that are representative of molecular laboratory work focused on bacterial genetics and DNA engineering. The methods used in the Practicum are many basic techniques that all molecular biologists need to master, such as gel electrophoresis, DNA preparation, and computer-based analysis of nucleic acid and protein sequences. Once a week, Practicum students meet with established scientists for workshops and additional activities such as campus tours and research talks. While the Practicum has clearly outlined protocols and requires methodical and thorough collection, measurement, and synthesis of data, the final outcome of the research – as with all scientific research – cannot be predicted in advance. Students will have the opportunity to account for everything they encounter in the lab during their final oral presentations. The six-week Practicum enables students to carry out meaningful research in a structured lab setting. Weekly workshops with the RISE Program Manager also introduce students to the scientific process, research ethics, how to read a research paper, and how to network in the scientific community. Apply to the Practicum if you have an interest in learning bacterial genetics, using the scientific method, and exploring how researchers work towards curing diseases such as cancer and neurological disorders.
